James E. Tate Jr.

City Council President, District 1

President James E. Tate Jr. has served on the Detroit City Council since 2010, leading with a commitment to accessible government and strong community engagement. A lifelong District 1 resident, his leadership is grounded in experience as Second Deputy Chief of the Detroit Police Department and as an Emmy-winning assignment editor at WXYZ-TV.

President Tate prioritizes transparency, hosting monthly community meetings and launching “Di$cover D1,” Detroit’s first district-wide online business directory to support local entrepreneurs. As Chair of the Planning and Economic Development Committee, he helps drive Detroit’s revitalization, securing economic opportunities, affordable housing and approving development projects that have created well paying jobs for residents.

A fierce advocate for equity, President Tate fought to ensure Detroiters had owner-ship opportunities in the cannabis industry. He refused to allow a recreational market without meaningful access for long-time residents—recognizing that many profited from the same plant that once criminalized and devastated Detroit families during the “War on Drugs.” His leadership has helped level the playing field in an industry that historically excluded Black and Brown communities.

President Tate is a champion for identifying ways to increase affordable and accessible housing in Detroit as well as sharpening his focus on mental health awareness through the “Protect Your Crown” campaign. Dedicated to youth empowerment, he serves on the Task Force on Black Male Engagement, mentoring future leaders. He resides in the Grandmont-Rosedale community with his wife, Dr. Nutrena Watts Tate, continuing his mission to build a stronger, more inclusive Detroit.
